This week\u2019s Torah Portion, Parashat Tzav, we read about the Olah Korban (Burnt offering, 6:8-13<\/a>), the Mincha Korban (Grain offering, 6:14-23<\/a>), the Khatat Korban (Sin offering, 6:24-30<\/a>), the Asham Korban (Guilt offering, 7:1-10<\/a>), the Shelamim Korban (Peace offering, 7:11-21<\/a>), forbidding eating the fat and the blood (7:22-27<\/a>), the share for the Cohen (Priest, 7:29-38<\/a>), and the ordination of Aaron and his sons. (NASB)<\/span><\/em> The biblical text states, \u05d5\u05b0\u05d6\u05b9\u05d0\u05ea \u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b7\u05ea \u05d6\u05b6\u05d1\u05b7\u05d7 \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd why is this the instruction (\u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b7\u05ea) of the offering called \u05d6\u05b6\u05d1\u05b7\u05d7 \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u201cthe peace offering?\u201d<\/span><\/em> The rabbis say this was meant to restore peace between God our Father in heaven and the people. In addition, we are told about the \u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05d3\u05b8\u05d4 \u201cthank\u201d<\/span><\/em> offering. The Psalmist describes this according to Tehillim \/ Psalms 50:23<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tehillim \/ Psalms 50:23
<\/strong>50:23 \u2018He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me; And to him who orders his way aright I shall show the salvation of God.\u2019 (NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Psalms states \u05d6\u05b9\u05d1\u05b5\u05d7\u05b7 \u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05d3\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d9\u05b0\u05db\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05d3\u05b8\u05e0\u05b0\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u201csacrifice of thanks, honors me.\u201d<\/span><\/em> Here we see how the one who honors the Lord does not just bring a thank offering, but also the one who orders his ways according to God\u2019s Word the Lord will show the salvation of God. It is very interesting how this is coupled to the Shelamim Korban (\u05d6\u05b6\u05d1\u05b7\u05d7 \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd), the way of God, salvation, and bringing glory to God in thankfulness. We also note the spelling of the word \u05d9\u05b0\u05db\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05d3\u05b8\u05e0\u05b0\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 as having two nun\u2019s (\u05e0) the rabbis say the reason for the doubling is that God will feel honoured both in olam hazeh (this world) and the olam haba (the world to come). These things speak to our act of worship through the sacrifice of our lives, just as Paul wrote according to Romans 12<\/a>, we are able to honor God in all worlds (on Earth and in the spiritual or heavenly regions). (Daat Zkenim on Vayikra \/ Leviticus 7.11 Part 1<\/span><\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NASB)<\/span><\/em> There were two types of Shelamim (Peace) offerings, one called \u05ea\u05d5\u05d3\u05d4 and the other which is referred to as \u05e9\u05dc\u05de\u05d9\u05dd. (Rabbeinu Bahya, Vayikra \/ Leviticus 7.11 Part 1<\/span><\/em>) What is interesting is how the Todah (\u05ea\u05d5\u05d3\u05d4) offering was accompanied by both unleavened and leavened bread. This is stated explicitly in verse 13, \u05d9\u05d2 \u05e2\u05b7\u05dc-\u05d7\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b9\u05ea \u05dc\u05b6\u05d7\u05b6\u05dd \u05d7\u05b8\u05de\u05b5\u05e5 \u05d9\u05b7\u05e7\u05b0\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05d1 \u05e7\u05b8\u05e8\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05e0\u05d5\u05b9 \u05e2\u05b7\u05dc-\u05d6\u05b6\u05d1\u05b7\u05d7 \u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05d3\u05b7\u05ea \u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05de\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5: 7:13 \u2018With the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving, he shall present his offering with cakes of leavened bread. (NASB)<\/span><\/em> What do these things teach us? I feel this speaks to our offering of thanks in this life is to be done in both the sacred space (at synagogue, our homes, our private lives, etc) and while we are out in the world by the mention of unleavened and leavened bread, respectively. The offering called \u05e9\u05dc\u05de\u05d9\u05dd with or without the word \u05ea\u05d5\u05d3\u05d4, or whether one is making a free will offering called either \u05e0\u05b0\u05d3\u05b8\u05d1\u05b8\u05d4 (charity) or \u05e0\u05d3\u05e8 (vow), depending on the wording of one\u2019s vow to the giving (or donation) of such an offering. In addition, something to note, the Torah states elsewhere (Vayikra \/ Leviticus 2:11<\/a>) saying, \u201cno manner of leavened material or honey is to be offered up on the Altar.\u201d<\/span><\/em> This tells us that these loaves of the \u05ea\u05d5\u05d3\u05d4 offering were not put on the Altar at all. Hence there is no contradiction here to what the Torah wrote in Vayikra \/ Leviticus 2:11<\/a>. The loaves were only \u201cwaved\u201d<\/span><\/em> before the Lord and not deposited or burned up on the Altar.

Vayikra \/ Leviticus 7:11-21
<\/strong>7:11 \u2018Now this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings which shall be presented to the Lord. 7:12 \u2018If he offers it by way of thanksgiving, then along with the sacrifice of thanksgiving he shall offer unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers spread with oil, and cakes of well stirred fine flour mixed with oil. 7:13 \u2018With the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving, he shall present his offering with cakes of leavened bread. 7:14 \u2018Of this he shall present one of every offering as a contribution to the Lord; it shall belong to the priest who sprinkles the blood of the peace offerings. 7:15 \u2018Now as for the flesh of the sacrifice of his thanksgiving peace offerings, it shall be eaten on the day of his offering; he shall not leave any of it over until morning. 7:16 \u2018But if the sacrifice of his offering is a votive or a freewill offering, it shall be eaten on the day that he offers his sacrifice, and on the next day what is left of it may be eaten; 7:17 but what is left over from the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day shall be burned with fire. 7:18 \u2018So if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings should ever be eaten on the third day, he who offers it will not be accepted, and it will not be reckoned to his benefit. It shall be an offensive thing, and the person who eats of it will bear his own iniquity. 7:19 \u2018Also the flesh that touches anything unclean shall not be eaten; it shall be burned with fire. As for other flesh, anyone who is clean may eat such flesh. 7:20 \u2018But the person who eats the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings which belong to the Lord, in his uncleanness, that person shall be cut off from his people. 7:21 \u2018When anyone touches anything unclean, whether human uncleanness, or an unclean animal, or any unclean detestable thing, and eats of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings which belong to the Lord, that person shall be cut off from his people.\u2019\u2018 (NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

What we have learned so far, there are offerings in the Torah, specifically those called \u05d6\u05b6\u05d1\u05b7\u05d7 \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u201cthe peace offering\u201d<\/span><\/em> categorizes different types of offerings. For instance, if the \u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd involved thanksgiving, the animal sacrifice are accompanied by breads, some of which are unleavened, and some of which are leavened. The rabbis say that the reason for the need of varying types of bread is do to what the sages call \u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8 \u05e9\u05d1\u05e2\u05d9\u05e1\u05d4(Sheor Shebeyisa) \u201cthe element of ego in the dough\u201d<\/span><\/em> by reason being pride also needed to be given up. The gemarah in the Talmud Bavli \u05d1\u05e8\u05db\u05d5\u05ea \/ Brachot 17a<\/em><\/span>, tells us that a righteous rabbi during the time of the Talmud would add a prayer at the conclusion of his shemona esrey amidah. The rabbi would say the following \u201cMaster of the universe, it is known and revealed before you that our will is to do your will. What holds us back is only \u2018Sheor Shebeyisa – \u05e9\u05d0\u05d5\u05e8 \u05e9\u05d1\u05e2\u05d9\u05e1\u05d4\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/span> the element of ego in the dough, or pride. Rashi comments on this gemarah saying that Sheor Shebeyisa is a reference to the \u05d9\u05e6\u05e8 \u05d4\u05e8\u05e2 yetzer harah, the evil inclination that incites a person to sin. We note this connection to the bread, as no other offering consisted of leavened bread. The rabbis also say \u201cOne of the reasons the Torah requires so many individual loaves of bread as part of the Todah sacrifice, is to enable as many people as possible to become aware of someone having been miraculously saved.\u201d<\/span><\/em> This concept of salvation comes from what is related to the thank offering, as the one who does not know the Lord, or does not care about God and His great works would not give thanks, and the one who does know the Lord and His powerful works in our lives and therefore would give thanks. Both the Author of the book of Hebrews and Peter wrote about this saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/strong>13:10 We have an altar from which those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat. 13:11 For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest as an offering for sin, are burned outside the camp. 13:12 Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate. 13:13 So, let us go out to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach. 13:14 For here we do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking the city which is to come. 13:15 Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name. 13:16 And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. 13:17 Obey your leaders and submit to them for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Here the author of the book of Hebrews tells us to always be giving the sacrifice of praise to God in the Messiah connecting the Messiah to these sacrifices. (\u05dc\u05b8\u05db\u05b5\u05df \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05db\u05b8\u05dc \u05e2\u05b5\u05ea \u05e0\u05b7\u05e7\u05b0\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05d1\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05ea\u05b4\u05d5\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05db\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d6\u05b6\u05d1\u05b7\u05d7 \u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05d3\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b5\u05d0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd, \u05db\u05b0\u05bc\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05de\u05b7\u05e8, \u05e4\u05b0\u05bc\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9 \u05e9\u05b0\u05c2\u05e4\u05b8\u05ea\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05d3\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05dc\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05de\u05d5\u05b9, 13:15<\/a>) In addition, Peter states that we are to at all times offer spiritual sacrifices (\u05d6\u05b4\u05d1\u05b0\u05d7\u05b5\u05d9 \u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b7) as being specially sanctified and set apart as a holy priesthood (\u05dc\u05b4\u05db\u05b0\u05d4\u05bb\u05e0\u05b7\u05bc\u05ea \u05e7\u05b9\u05d3\u05b6\u05e9\u05c1), meaning this is the way we should be living our lives because of what God has done for us through the Messiah Yeshua.
