{"id":1103,"date":"2011-11-06T13:19:00","date_gmt":"2011-11-06T13:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.matsati.com\/bblog2\/client\/index.cfm\/2011\/11\/6\/Parashat-Vayera-Was-God-Himself-Speaking-to-Avraham"},"modified":"2012-09-29T16:20:38","modified_gmt":"2012-09-29T16:20:38","slug":"parashat-vayera-was-god-himself-speaking-to-avraham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/index.php\/parashat-vayera-was-god-himself-speaking-to-avraham\/","title":{"rendered":"Parashat Vayera, Was God Himself Speaking to Avraham?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<!-- Place some text here to wrap near image --><\/p>\n<p>This week&rsquo;s Parashah, Parashat Vayera (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Bereshit \/ Genesis 18:1-22:24<\/em>)<\/font> we read in the opening verses <font style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b5\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0 \u05d0\u05b5\u05dc\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc\u05b9\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05de\u05b7\u05de\u05b0\u05e8\u05b5\u05d0 <\/font><em>&ldquo;<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\">the Lord appeared to him (Avraham) by the oaks of Mamre,&rdquo;<\/font><\/em> here we find the Lord God almighty visits Avraham along with two men which are believed to be angels from the Lord (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>18:1-3<\/em><\/font>).&nbsp; Avraham learns that his wife Sarah is going to bear a son (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>18:9-15<\/em><\/font>), the Lord speaks to Avraham about the destruction of Sodom and Gemorah and Avraham seeks mercy for these evil cities for the sake of the righteous (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>18:17-33<\/em><\/font>).&nbsp; The Lord has mercy on Lot and Lot recognizes the mercy and grace of God <font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u05d4\u05b4\u05e0\u05bc\u05b5\u05d4-\u05e0\u05b8\u05d0 \u05de\u05b8\u05e6\u05b8\u05d0 \u05e2\u05b7\u05d1\u05b0\u05d3\u05bc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05d7\u05b5\u05df \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b5\u05d9\u05e0\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05d5\u05b7\u05ea\u05bc\u05b7\u05d2\u05b0\u05d3\u05bc\u05b5\u05dc \u05d7\u05b7\u05e1\u05b0\u05d3\u05bc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8 \u05e2\u05b8\u05e9\u05b4\u05b9\u05d9\u05ea\u05b8 \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05bc\u05b8\u05d3\u05b4\u05d9 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05d7\u05b2\u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05e0\u05b7\u05e4\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05e0\u05b9\u05db\u05b4\u05d9 \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05d0\u05d5\u05bc\u05db\u05b7\u05dc \u05dc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05de\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc\u05b5\u05d8 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d4\u05b8\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e4\u05bc\u05b6\u05df-\u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d3\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05e7\u05b7\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b8\u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d5\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9:<\/em><\/font> <em><font style=\"color: #0000ff;\">19:19<\/font> &lsquo;<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Now behold, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have magnified your lovingkindness, which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountains, for the disaster will overtake me and I will die; (NASB),<\/font><\/em> Lot&rsquo;s daughters commit sexual sin with their father (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>19:31-38<\/em><\/font>), Avraham encounters Avimelech and Avimelech takes Sarah for his wife and God&rsquo;s subsequent curse and then the forgiveness of Avimelech and all his household (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>20:1-18<\/em><\/font>), and God tests Avraham to sacrifice his only son Yitzchak (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>22:1-18<\/em><\/font>). &nbsp;As we read the Hebrew text we have the understanding that the Lord has great plans for Avraham saying <em>&ldquo;<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Shall I hide from Avraham what I am about to do&rdquo;<\/font><\/em><font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> <em>\u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4\u05b8\u05dd \u05d4\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d9\u05b4\u05d4\u05b0\u05d9\u05b6\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d2\u05d5\u05b9\u05d9 \u05d2\u05bc\u05b8\u05d3\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc \u05d5\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05e6\u05d5\u05bc\u05dd \u05d5\u05b0\u05e0\u05b4\u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b0\u05db\u05d5\u05bc-\u05d1\u05d5\u05b9 \u05db\u05bc\u05b9\u05dc \u05d2\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05d9\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5:<\/em> <\/font><em><font style=\"color: #0000ff;\">18:18<\/font> &ldquo;<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\">since Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and in him all the nations of the earth will be blessed?&rdquo;<\/font><\/em> After Avraham successfully passes being tested, God says <font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b2\u05db\u05d5\u05bc \u05d1\u05b0\u05d6\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e2\u05b2\u05da\u05b8 \u05db\u05bc\u05b9\u05dc \u05d2\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05d9\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5 \u05e2\u05b5\u05e7\u05b6\u05d1 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e2\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e7\u05b9\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9:<\/em> <\/font><em><font style=\"color: #0000ff;\">22:18<\/font> &lsquo;<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.&rsquo;<\/font><\/em>&nbsp; The significance of the opening passages to Parashat Vayera in <font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Bereshit \/ <\/em><em>Genesis 18:1-3<\/em><\/font> and the rest of the Parashah centers around the question on who is the person that Avraham is speaking to, is He the Lord God Almighty?&nbsp; The Hebrew text says &ldquo;And Adonai (YHVH) appeared to him.&rdquo; The verb \u05d5\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0 appears 167 times in the Tanach and 88 times in the Torah, each occurrence of the word requires context, in some cases it refers to the Lord saw (see <em>Bereshit 1<\/em>) and in others like in our text this week as &ldquo;appeared&rdquo;
