{"id":1097,"date":"2011-12-11T14:53:00","date_gmt":"2011-12-11T14:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.matsati.com\/bblog2\/client\/index.cfm\/2011\/12\/11\/Parashat-Vayeshev-Understanding-the-Messiah-by-the-life-of-Yoseph"},"modified":"2012-09-29T16:19:31","modified_gmt":"2012-09-29T16:19:31","slug":"parashat-vayeshev-understanding-the-messiah-by-the-life-of-yoseph","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/index.php\/parashat-vayeshev-understanding-the-messiah-by-the-life-of-yoseph\/","title":{"rendered":"Parashat Vayeshev, Understanding the Messiah by the life of Yoseph"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<!-- Place some text here to wrap near image --><\/p>\n<p>In this week&rsquo;s reading from Parashat Vayeshev (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Bereshit \/ Genesis 37:1-40:23<\/em><\/font>) we learn that Yaakov (Jacob) loved Yoseph (Joseph) more than his brothers (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>37:3,<\/em><em> <\/em>\u05d5\u05b0\u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc \u05d0\u05b8\u05d4\u05b7\u05d1 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05e1\u05b5\u05e3 \u05de\u05b4\u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc-\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05e0\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5<\/font>).&nbsp; Yoseph had a dream about his future (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>37:5-10<\/em><\/font>) as a result his brothers become jealous (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>37:11<\/em><\/font>).&nbsp; As the narrative continues, Yoseph&rsquo;s brothers are plotting murder in their hearts (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>37:18-22<\/em><\/font>) but instead put him into a pit (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>37:23<\/em><\/font>) and then sell him into slavery to the Ishmaelites (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>37:27-29<\/em><\/font>).&nbsp; The Ishmaelites sell Yoseph to Potiphar in Mitzrayim (Egypt) where Yoseph acts righteously (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u05d5\u05bc\u05e6\u05b0\u05d3\u05b8\u05e7\u05b8\u05d4<\/em><\/font>) and God prospers him.&nbsp; Potiphar&rsquo;s wife falsely accuses Yoseph and he is placed in jail (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>39:1-20<\/em><\/font>).&nbsp; The Lord God makes Yoseph prosperous in jail and Yoseph interprets dreams for the baker and butler, two people Pharaoh had placed in prison (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>40:5-23<\/em><\/font>).&nbsp; This week&rsquo;s parashah primarily discusses Yoseph, however in the midst of the narrative on Yoseph there is a short story on Judah found in <font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Bereshit 38:1-30<\/em><\/font>.&nbsp; Yoseph was the eleventh son born to Yaakov and was the first born of his wife Rachael.&nbsp; As a result, Yaakov showed Yoseph favoritism over his brothers (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u05d5\u05b0\u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc \u05d0\u05b8\u05d4\u05b7\u05d1 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05e1\u05b5\u05e3 \u05de\u05b4\u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc-\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05e0\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9-\u05d1\u05b6\u05df-\u05d6\u05b0\u05e7\u05bb\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/em><\/font>).&nbsp; The favoritism of his Father caused Yoseph to be a spoiled son based on what we read in <font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>37:2<\/em> <em>\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u05d1\u05b5\u05d0 \u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05e1\u05b5\u05e3 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d3\u05bc\u05b4\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05ea\u05b8\u05dd \u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b6\u05dc-\u05d0\u05b2\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd<\/em><\/font> He brought a bad report about his brothers.&nbsp; Though Yoseph was spoiled by Yaakov, he walked in righteousness (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u05d5\u05bc\u05e6\u05b0\u05d3\u05b8\u05e7\u05b8\u05d4<\/em><\/font>) and justice (<em>\u05de\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05d8<\/em>) more so than his brothers.&nbsp; The juxtaposition of the story of Judah (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>38:1-30<\/em><\/font>) with Yoseph and Potiphar&rsquo;s wife (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>39:1-20<\/em><\/font>) illustrates for us that Yoseph chooses the path of righteousness.&nbsp; As a result, the Lord was with Yoseph (<font style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b9\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05e1\u05b5\u05e3 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b4\u05d9\u05e9\u05c1 \u05de\u05b7\u05e6\u05b0\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05d7\u05b7<\/em><\/font>) prospering him and preparing him for the plans He has for him.&nbsp; Today have you chosen the path of righteousness regardless of what comes your way in life?
